An ancient Indian art that originated about 3000 years ago, Kalamkari derives its name from Kalam meaning pen, and Kari meaning work, literally pen-work. The artist uses a bamboo or date palm stick as the brush or pen to literally paint on the fabric.

While earlier the canvas for the art was confined to cotton fabric only, Kalamkari is now found on silk and other materials as well. The paints used are always organic, mostly comprised of vegetable dyes.
