There’s a time and place for demure and it’s definitely not your wedding day. And judging by some of the looks our recent celebrity brides put together, we aren’t alone with our partiality towards all things sparkly. Whether it was Anushka Sharma or Deepika Padukone, most chose a shimmering outfit for at least one, if not all, of their functions. Another single common denominator among these Bollywood brides? Saris. While the celebrities mostly opted for embellished numbers, you don’t have to follow in their stead if sequins, crystals, bells and whistles don’t float your boat—just look to metallic saris for the win instead.

Below, we spill the beans on everything you need to know about a metallic sari—from how to style it to where you can wear it—and list out all the celebrities who have made a compelling case for metallic saris as part of wedding festivities. Scroll ahead for all the details.

Celebrities like Shilpa Shetty Kundra and Sonam Kapoor Ahuja have also chosen to experiment with the drape: Kapoor Ahuja picked a silver gold Hemang Agrawal sari with the pallu draped like a dupatta; and Shetty Kundra, who has endorsed alternate saris time and again, wore an onion pink concept sari by Kiran Uttam Ghosh Renu Oberoi with a high-neck semi-sheer blouse, finishing her look with statement bracelets and rings.

That was the final straw. “Try Panigren”–(‘I shall try’) he responded.

Over the years, several designers have regularly presented their take on metallic saris on the runway. Take designer Amit Aggarwal for instance. Apart from his use of upcycled materials like plastic, he is also famed for modern silhouettes that include pre-draped saris and hybrid sari gowns. Aggarwal, who knows how to marry shine with with structure, has some of the most winning options in his lineup. Rimzim Dadu and Gaurav Jai Gupta also lend an alternative perspective to the use of traditional techniques and materials by way of deconstruction, re-engineering and assembly. If you remember, Dadu’s sculpted metallic sari had won Sonam Kapoor Ahuja’s vote for her Cannes 2016 appearance.

On the other hand, handloom experts Sanjay Garg of Raw Mango and Gaurang Shah have mastered the metallic sari through their traditional weaves. While conventional weaves make ideal picks for the main function, contemporary metallic saris are great alternatives for a sangeet (a style favoured by Priyanka Chopra) or a formal reception. If the idea seems too left-sided for your nuptials, make space for them in your trousseau for later, to not miss out on the trend.

Bollywood celebrities who have aced the metallic sari

Time and again, Bollywood celebrities have proved that metallic saris can be either super subtle or intensely bold. Plus, there’s an entire spectrum of alloys in every shade imaginable to take your pick home. An Advaya By The House of Angadi gold Kanjeevaram sari won Deepika Padukone’s vote for her Bengaluru reception last November. Jacqueline Fernandez showed up in a gold Tarun Tahiliani sari for the star’s reception in Mumbai.
